The Basics On Common Kitchen Utensils
Take stock of the different rooms and parts of your house. More often
than not, you favorite part of the house would be the kitchen. In
addition to a beautifully designed kitchen, a fully equipped kitchen
would also be something you'd be proud of. Are you aware of the many
types of equipment and utensils that your kitchen has? Here is a brief
description on the normal materials used in every household. Normally
they include earthenware or copperware. Other items made from aluminum,
iron, and even silver are also used. The flavor of some foods can be
enhanced by some utensils. Certain traditional Indian foods are made
using earthen ware and copper ware, as it brings a better taste and
smell to the food item.
It was during the 18th century when the
study of the materials used in various kitchen utensils began. Benjamin
Thompson has done a lot of research on this topic and he has contributed
important facts on utensil materials. The first ever material that was
used in these kitchen utensils is copper. Soon, aluminum and silver
joined the mix. Each material has its own set of pros and cons which are
then used to determine which material would be used. If copper is your
material of choice, you have to make use of several treatment measures.
You'd have to do some varnishing and tinning. There are times when you'd
also have to do some enameling.
This is to prevent the food and
the copper from mixing together and providing adverse results. If that
happens, the food could become poisonous. In the process of cooking, it
is also important to stay within a specific temperature range. Iron and
earthen ware utensils have been very rare back in the 18th century. It
was only a little later when tin, clay and steel have been introduced in
 making kitchen utensils.
You will find that copper has excellent
thermal conductivity properties. Kitchen utensils are made with copper
for precisely that reason. It may not have escaped your notice, but
kitchen utensils with copper as their main material look so good they'd
qualify as works of art. Placing them in your kitchen would be quite
decorative and make the place look more inviting. There are two types of
aluminum if that is the material you want on your kitchen utensils. The
first one is alloyed aluminum. The other ones is unalloyed aluminum.
Both are light weighted.
Kitchen utensils made from earthen ware
are less favored because they tend to become brittle in time. You see,
lead is normally added when the earthenware is glazed. This might turn
the food inedible. You should know that most of these glazed vessels are
banded because of the reasons. They are considered to be health risks.
If you use iron utensils, there is a possibility of them rusting. But
durability is not a problem with them. In addition, cleaning them is
also very easy. They will also turn smooth after some time. They are
comparatively strong, when you compare it with aluminum utensils. You
wouldn't have a problem with your iron utensils rusting if you only
clean them properly and store them in a clean, dry place.
